Food education is a holistic education through diet to develop children’s ability to judge food nutrition. Also, food education can cultivate the independent personality of children, which can make them understand gratitude and love.

In the process of children’s growth, picky eating is a problem that many parents are worried about. Picky eating may cause malnutrition and nutritional imbalance, which is a long-term health risk. The most worrying thing is that everyone knows that picky eating all harm and no benefit, however, some children cannot be persuaded to have a healthy diet while it is impossible for parents supervising children’s diet all the time.

Let’s change the mindset. Children can develop a balanced diet by themselves after education. This kind of education is food education.

Likeda Education has paid attention to food education on students. We use foods as a medium to achieve interdisciplinary education and enable students to be whole-person development.

At the end of April, potatoes of Likeda STEAM Student Campsite entered the harvest period. Students of Peking University New Century School – Wenzhou were working hard to dig out potatoes in the field. Although they were sweating and exhausted, they showed a satisfying smile when they saw the harvest obtained through labouring.

In addition to potatoes, Likeda STEAM Student Campsite grows more than 60 types of seasonal vegetables and fruits, such as corns, canes, eggplants, tomatoes, watermelons, etc. Under the guidance of garden experts and teachers, students carried out learning activities like sowing, nursery, top-dressing, observation, harvesting, and crop management. During the learning process, students utilized their senses to actively devote to the learning activities. Knowledge is everywhere in our daily life and not limited to books. Hence, this learning process was interdisciplinary.

For example,

  1. Through observation and recording, students could understand the process and scientific principles of plants’ growth, which can enhance their interest in foods;
  2. After students understood the nutritional value of different foods, they could know that “eating right” was more important than “eating as wishes”;
  3. Students would learn and create works about nature to experience the emotion of litterateurs in order to establish positive values for students.

In response to the epidemic, students should avoid gathering in canteens. Wenzhou Dalton Elementary School turned difficulties into opportunities for students to learn. The school launched the “Lunch Box Week” in the first week of school to encourage students and parents preparing lunch box together. When students were participating in food preparation, they could know what they will eat by recognizing different ingredients. Moreover, some parents and students made exquisite lunch boxes by artistic technique, which could stimulate children’s interest in food to help them have balanced diets.
